Apple is working on a 3D Graphical User Interface for iOS devices that will work with proximity sensor arrays and will respond to hovering gestures, according to a Patently Apple report.

A patent application published today covers a 3D display environment that uses orientation data obtained from onboard sensors to display a perspective view without the user needing to touch the display.

In some implementations, a computer-implemented method is performed by one or more processors onboard a handheld mobile device. The method includes generating a 3D display environment; receiving first sensor data from one or more sensors onboard the mobile device, where the first sensor data is indicative of a first orientation of the mobile device relative to a reference coordinate frame; determining a first perspective projection of the 3D display environment based on the first sensor data; displaying the first perspective projection of the 3D display environment on a display of the mobile device; receiving second sensor data from the one or more sensors onboard the mobile device, where the second sensor data is indicative of a second orientation of the mobile device relative to the reference coordinate frame; determining a second perspective projection of the 3D display environment based on the second sensor data; and displaying the second perspective projection of the 3D display environment on the display of the mobile device.

Auto-Renewable Subscriptions allow users to purchase In-App content, and the purchase is automatically renewed at the end of the period unless the user chooses to cancel the subscription. Using In-App Purchase provides a simple standardized way to implement these Auto-Renewable Subscriptions for your content.”

Apple apparently posted the gold master of Xcode 4 this morning — that’s the final pre-release version before the final version is eventually offered up to the public. Unfortunately, just as soon as the new version of Xcode went up, it was pulled right back down again. Reports from developers who saw the release’s Read Me say that it apparently listed Mac OS X 10.7 Lion as a requirement to run, and as you probably already know, that version of the OS isn’t actually available yet. So one of two things is happening here: either there was a typo in the documentation, and Apple just meant that Xcode 4 requires 10.6, or Xcode 4 really does require a version of Lion, and a beta of that operating system will be available to developers soon.

At any rate, we do know Xcode 4 is officially on the way. Apple’s Developer Tools evangelist says on Twitter that we can expect it out very soon. The new version will bring a single-window UI for developers of Mac and iOS apps and a bunch of other new features for them to play with. Stay tuned, devs — there’ll be new goodies on Apple’s dev portal soon enough.

Xperia Arc.

Apple has removed its built in methods to help developers detect jailbroken devices from iOS 4.2, according to NetworkWorld.

This detection API let the MDM applications in effect ask the operating system if it had been compromised. Jailbreak exploits typically change a number of operating system files, and exploit one or another low-level OS features to let users directly load their own or third-party applications.

Previously, developers had created their own series of operating system checks to detect jailbreak.

“We used it when it was available, but as an adjunct,” says Joe Owen, vice president of engineering at Sybase, which offers the Afaria device management software. “I’m not sure what motivated their removing that….I’ve not had anyone [at enterprise customer sites] talk to me about this API being present or being removed.”

In July of this year the Library of Congress deemed that jailbreaking your iPhone in order to install applications not approved by Apple and/or to unlock is legal.

Apple has just seeded iOS 4.2.1 Gold Master to developers. This update has build number 8C148 and, according to MacStories, was just released internally at Apple last night. This update for iOS 4.2 may have been released in an attempt to squash last minute Exchange and audio-related bugs discovered earlier.

Just last week Apple released a second gold master seed for the iPad to address Wi-Fi related problems. The audio issues in iOS had been documented by several developers across several different devices on Apple’s Developer Forums. Many developers noted that audio sessions were interrupted and not resumed when the device was locked and then unlocked.

At the last iOS-related Apple event, Steve Jobs told us that iOS 4.2 would be coming out sometime in November. To recap, iOS 4.2 will be bringing all of the iOS 4 goodies to the iPad. The rest of the iOS devices will also be getting the new AirPrint and AirSharing feature, which allows for printing directly from the iOS device and streaming to an Apple TV.

It has been a few weeks since we last heard anything about the Mac App Store, but last night Apple emailed developers enrolled in the Mac development program to let them know that the store would be “Coming Soon.”

The email from Apple noted, “The Mac App Store will be open soon, providing customers around the world a new way to explore and purchase apps made just for Mac. Ensure your app is ready when we open the Mac App Store — submit it for review today.”

The email went on to tell developers what they needed in order to submit Mac apps, “Log in to the Mac Dev Center for details on setting up an iTunes Connect account, creating Apple-issued Mac Distribution Certificates, and preparing your apps for the review process.”

When the Mac App Store was first detailed back in October, Steve Jobs said the store would be opened within 90-days. If this email confirms Apple’s plans, then we could see a Mac App Store in December or early January.
